Post Secrets, snow and traveling regionally

Today's Post Secret's were either depressing or otherwise not so pleasant, so I'm not posting one today. Anorexia, death, infidelity....eh. Just not feeling it!

This past week has been full of traveling and enjoying art. I have visited many different art leagues and art institutions to see how others handle running their classes/memberships/tuition, etc. It's been very informative and a lot of fun. The trip included the Visual Arts Center in Richmond VA, the Richmond Museum of Fine Art, another little cool art center in Richmond, the Torpedo Factory and the Art League School in Alexandria VA, and the Delaware Museum of Art. Still a couple places to see - some of the travel was interrupted by snow and a 24 hour bug that I unfortunately became host to. Now to just compile all the info and come up with a plan for the future of the educational department of the Art League, or at least a proposed future. (Big fan of planning.)

I have a ton of pictures to post, but I think the camera is still out in the car and I'm feeling to lazy to go get it. So pics to come. Two paintings in progress, pics to come of those as well.

January is nearly over, one more month closer to green grass, chirping birds, crocus and daffodils!

Tom Waits and Sunday mornings

The jury is still out on what I think about Tom Waits. He's about to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Or maybe that's already happened. I only discovered him this past year, but have heard him mentioned in music circles. I heard him for the first time on satellite radio, and really loved the song I heard, so I bought a couple of cd's. It's a pretty eclectic mix of sounds. Sometimes he sounds a little like Jimmy Durante, other times he sounds like he's talking rather than singing. Sometimes he sounds amazing. At least he's not boring.

Craziness

We all have some asymetry to our faces, some have more than others. I have heard it referred to as the evil side/nice side, the masculine/feminine. When I saw the mug shot of this guy, the first thing I thought of was how different the sides of his face looked. One side looked very sinister. I mentioned it to a co-worker who is good on Photoshop. He copied the left side of his face and flipped it, making one face, then did the same to other. So, what you see is the full "evil side" and the full "nice side". Pretty remarkable in this case. All I can think about is how this guy had this horrible Uncle Fester looking dude living inside of the relatively innocent looking 22 year old guy. Kind of freaky, huh?

Life and its absurdity

There's a line from "Bridget Jones Diary" that goes something like, "as soon as one thing in your life is going incredibly well, another part falls spectactularly apart". I would agree with that statement, and am constantly amazed at the workings of life and how no matter how jaded I get, it never ceases to surprise me. I think much of it is about getting tested - God saying, "have you learned yet? did you get it the first time? let's just see with this POP QUIZ. don't worry, I'm grading on a curve."

1-1-11

What a cool date. Yeah, it was yesterday, but still.

A nice warm morning. The snow is melting, and that's a good thing. Today will be a day of brunch with a friend and taking down the Christmas stuff...and painting. The time of year to get my inventory replenished for spring/summer art shows is here. I have been slightly slothlike lately, which is pretty much where I live until spring. Ugh. No wonder I hate winter.

2011 is sure to be a good one, and I'm looking forward to all it has to offer. Happy New Year to YOU!
